Elaborate Hoax Hostage Call Reported on Route 3A

On Sunday evening, Cohasset police and regional emergency responders launched a significant operation following an elaborate hoax hostage call originating from a jewelry store on Route 3A. The incident, which occurred around 6:30 p.m., prompted the temporary closure of Route 3A and a deployment of officers from multiple departments.

Details of the Fake Hostage Situation

The South Shore Regional Emergency Communications Center (SSRECC) received a distressing call from an individual claiming to be barricaded inside the closed jewelry store, holding two people hostage at gunpoint. According to Cohasset police, the caller stated he was armed with both a pistol and a rifle and demanded money for the release of the hostages.

Tac Alert Response and Route Closure

Upon receiving the call, SSRECC activated a Tac-Alert, mobilizing officers from Cohasset as well as neighboring Hingham, Norwell, Scituate, and Hull. Police responded rapidly, establishing a perimeter around the business and closing Route 3A in both directions between the Scituate town line and Beechwood Street to safeguard the area during the investigation.

Caller Had Unauthorized Surveillance Access

While engaging with police via phone, the caller demonstrated detailed knowledge of the jewelry store—describing areas off-limits to the public and providing accurate information about officers' locations as they arrived. Later investigation revealed the caller had unauthorized surveillance access to the store’s security cameras, allowing real-time observation of the police response.

Police Sweep Reveals No Hostages

The situation was treated as credible due to the caller's specific information. However, after confirming the business owner, her family, and employees were safe, a tactical sweep of the building found no occupants or evidence of a hostage situation. Police determined that the incident was a fake hostage situation and ruled it an elaborate hoax. No injuries were reported and no actual hostages were taken.

Cohasset Police Investigation Ongoing

Cohasset police investigation continues into the identity of the caller and the unauthorized access of the store's security system. Chief William Quigley commended dispatchers for their professional response, stating they managed an apparently "extremely dangerous and rapidly developing hostage situation" and gathered valuable information for the ongoing criminal investigation.

Public Safety Warning on Swatting Incidents

Chief Quigley also reminded the public that such pranks and swatting incidents endanger both law enforcement and civilians, disrupt local businesses, divert critical emergency response resources, and create unnecessary risks. The department continues to seek those responsible and to warn against similar actions in the future.
