After a period filled with speculation and beta testing, Google has started distributing Android 16 to its users. The initial release of the update takes place on Pixel devices while other Android phones will receive it within upcoming weeks or probably months.

The over-the-air (OTA) update should reach Pixel users today. People who don’t want to wait can download system images and manual update files from Google’s developer site. Those who aren’t particularly enthusiastic about the update can wait. The new update does not introduce major changes immediately.

The launch of Android 16 remains understated but includes multiple new features to note and hints at larger updates planned for later this year.

What’s New in Android 16

The notification shade now shows the most significant modifications in Android 16. Android 7.0 Nougat was when Google first implemented bundled notifications. With Android 16 bundling notifications became mandatory instead of being optional. Notifications from the same app merge together as a single expandable card which keeps your screen neat and tidy. While this modification remains understated it brings positive improvements.

Another addition is live update notifications. A limited number of rideshare and delivery apps initially use this feature for real-time status updates shown through small icons on the status bar. When users tap these icons, it opens a small window that includes a live progress bar. Google has announced collaboration with Samsung and OnePlus to implement integration with the Now Bar and Live Alerts.

Security also gets a boost. Starting with Android 16 every device operating on this platform will now receive the Advanced Protection feature. Activating this feature prevents your phone from connecting to old 2G networks and blocks access to insecure websites while also disabling USB data transfers. Google continues to expand its emphasis on user privacy alongside strengthening device protection.

The new generative AI-powered emoji feature provides exciting customization opportunities. The Pixel Studio application lets users make personalized emojis with Emoji Kitchen. This playful feature reflects Google’s expanding exploration into generative AI technologies.

The latest version of Android brings significant development improvements under the hood. One key improvement is automatic large-screen support. Starting with Android 16 (API level 36), apps will now automatically adjust their size to better fit foldables and tablet screens. Developers who take larger display devices into account will benefit from improved app aesthetics on bigger screens due to this change.

The system receives camera enhancements through its built-in features. The latest Android 16 version provides support for new camera features including hybrid auto-exposure and motion photos among other functionalities. Users can capture HDR screenshots but app compatibility will differ. Google continues to strengthen limitations on background processes that could impact certain applications while delivering better battery conservation across devices.

Pixel Drop Features: VIPs and More

Google launches Pixel Drop as part of its Android 16 rollout. Although it doesn’t add numerous new features this version brings some special functionalities exclusively for Pixel devices. The most important feature included in this update is the Pixel VIPs function. Google’s new feature Pixel VIPs extends the original concept of favorite contacts. A new widget allows users to monitor their VIP contacts by displaying recent WhatsApp and Messages interactions alongside shared location details and birthdays. VIP contacts have the ability to access phones even when Do Not Disturb mode is activated.

The update incorporates expanded hearing aid support alongside live search functionality in the magnifier app. Expressive Captions now expands its availability beyond the U.S. to include users in the UK, Canada, and Australia.

Pixel phones exclusively support these features which depend on Android 16 functionality.

Delayed but Promising Features

Certain Android 16 features will not be available until future dates. Google plans to release its most awaited updates for Android 16 in the latter part of 2025.

Take Material 3 Expressive, for instance. The updated design language which Google previewed last month will launch before year end. Google has not announced a specific release schedule but has advised developers to start getting their apps ready now. The updated design ensures that Android users will experience an interface with more vibrant colors and expressive features.

Android’s new desktop mode arrives after much anticipation. This new technology was created through Samsung collaboration and improves upon Samsung’s DeX system. The new operating mode lets tablets and future phones project a windowed desktop interface onto external displays. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold and similar foldable devices will not provide on-device windowing capabilities but will work with the external display version.

OEM support is not guaranteed. The Pixel series will benefit from comprehensive windowing support while other devices running Android 16 might receive limited screen mirroring features based on their manufacturers’ choices.

A Shift in Release Strategy

The timing of Android 16’s release cycle is one of its most significant changes even though it doesn’t involve feature updates. Up until now Android updates came out during fall seasons to match the launch of new Pixel hardware. That’s no longer the case. Google will release significant Android updates in late spring followed by minor updates at year’s end that concentrate on API improvements.

The new change aims to establish a release schedule that allows for greater flexibility.
