Stranger Things Ends With Three-Part Season 5 Event
Netflix’s new official Stranger Things Season 5 teaser is here, and it delivers exactly what fans want for the series finale: lots of tension building for the coming battle of the ages, a battle between Hawkins’ best and the darkest Upside Down has ever seen.
The nearly one-minute-long clip offers a handful of chills, including more of the Upside Down creeping into Hawkins, Kali the demo-dogs stalking the halls, and set pieces of Lucas and friends running from a flamethrower. And the best part? Linda Hamilton, armed and ready for battle, shows up to join the Hawkins crew.
As the season 4 finale shockingly ended with Vecna ripping the gate wide open and unleashing the Upside Down upon Hawkins, season 5 will pick up some time after this epic cliffhanger and set in the fall of 1987. It also cleverly lands on the third anniversary of Will Byers’ disappearance, the tragic event that kicked off Stranger Things in season 1.
The season will consist of eight episodes. However, these aren’t your average episodes. Netflix says all eight episodes will be feature-length, meaning eight Stranger Things movies.
Netflix’s official description for season 5 sets the stage for an all-hands-on-deck, high-stakes finale. Hawkins has changed forever, thanks to the Rifts being opened, and the group of “kids,” alongside some of their new and old friends, are all tasked with a single mission: find Vecna and kill him. But, where is Vecna? What are his plans? And, can Hawkins’s remaining heroes possibly stop him? To make matters worse, the U.S. government has now put Hawkins under military quarantine and is doubling down on capturing Eleven, forcing Hawkins’s superhero into hiding once again.
The clock is also ticking, thanks to Will’s third anniversary approaching. The teaser made it clear: the final battle is nigh, and the monster might be darker, more malicious, and more deadly than Hawkins has ever seen before. But, there is hope: all of the Hawkins gang, the entire party, are needed for the final battle.
Who’s Back and What to Know
Most of the Stranger Things main cast is expected to return for the final season. A few important recurring characters, including Amybeth McNulty (Vicki) and Gabriella Pizzolo (Suzie, Dustin’s girlfriend), have also returned for the series finale.
Jamie Campbell Bower is set to reprise his role as Vecna, the dark new villain who gained terrifying prominence in season 4.
Joining them are a handful of notable and powerhouse newcomers. Linda Hamilton is making the jump from Terminator to Hawkins, playing a character named Dr. Kay. Other new additions include Nell Fisher as Holly Wheeler, Jake Connelly as Derek Turnbow, and Alex Breaux as Lt. Akers.
The new official teaser trailer has a few moments that are sure to both excite and delight diehard fans. The scene of Lucas and others hunkering down from the demo-dogs will feel shockingly familiar, as it rips off one of the most famous scenes in all of cinematic history, the iconic kitchen scene with velociraptors in Jurassic Park. There is also the fun little reminder that Stranger Things will forever remain its best psychological mind-fuck of all time with that one simple utterance of Vecna moaning out that all-too-familiar, “found you” phrase.
However, the big emotional highlight (or gut-punch?) of the new trailer is when a shot pans to Eddie Munson’s gravestone in what is the middle of what looks to be a forest. The once-heroic (to Hawkins at least) Stranger Things character’s gravestone is spray-painted with “Burn in hell” — a harsh reminder that no matter his heroism in leading the bats against Vecna in the fourth-season finale, much of Hawkins will always see Eddie as a pariah. Eddie’s death was an emotional gut punch for the audience, one of the most powerful Stranger Things characters ever killed (alongside Bob Newby’s death in season 2). Hawkins’s true perception of Eddie and the loss of Hawkins’s true golden boy will make for a powerful moment, but it will sting to know that Hawkins may never truly get it right.
One head-scratcher? How Netflix will choose to release all eight episodes. In a choice certain to infuriate fans who want the chance to binge the finale in one fell swoop, Netflix has chosen to split Stranger Things Season 5 into three separate parts.
Volume 1 will arrive on November 26, 2025. Volume 2 will be released exactly one month later on Christmas Day, December 25, 2025. However, the big finale for Stranger Things Season 5 will land on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2025.
By splitting the eight-episode finale into three installments, the countdown to Hawkins’ last stand will span the holiday season, keeping Stranger Things at the center of pop culture for months.
For fans of the Netflix series, Season 5 represents more than just the conclusion to the show. It is the culmination of a multi-year saga that spans an entire generation of Stranger Things characters and an endless stream of theories, memes, and discussions. As the new teaser reminds us, the time has come for the last ride. All of the losses, all of the battles, all of the victories lead to this. Will all of Hawkins’ best make it out alive? Only time and one last epic battle will tell.
