Marvel’s Ironheart Reveals First Look at The Hood in Action

Ryan Coogler is having a good year. Not long after the box office triumph of his newest film, Sinners, the Oscar-nominated director is now prepping another hit for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), this time taking on the writer and director roles for the upcoming Ironheart limited series. Marvel has just shared a fresh teaser for the project with the public, ahead of its June 2025 premiere.

Ironheart is a six-episode TV series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, centering on the adventures of Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams, aka Ironheart. In the comics, she is a teenage engineering genius and a self-taught engineer, mentored by Tony Stark in the comics. The series will be the last television series to release in the MCU’s Phase Five.

Ironheart was originally announced back in December 2020 and was planned for release in 2023. However, in 2022, Marvel adjusted its long-term plans for the MCU, streamlining its future projects to release fewer new shows and movies each year. The decision was made after much fan feedback, as many worried the company’s large pipeline had caused oversaturation in the market. With the schedule change, Ironheart’s premiere has been pushed to this summer.

Previewed in footage shown at the 2024 D23 event, Ironheart has been described as “a crime show with an Iron Man twist at the center of it.” This description and the glimpses of the series shown off so far suggest a much grittier and grounded feel than previous MCU series, although it remains connected to past series and films through its title character.

Riri Williams was first introduced in the MCU through the film 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In the movie, she got caught up in a war with Namor and the blue-skinned underwater army he commanded after creating a vibranium detector while attending MIT as an engineering student. During the film, she connected with Shuri, bonding over their shared love of science, and eventually constructed an Iron Man-like armored suit to aid Wakanda in its time of need. In the end, she had to leave it with the Wakandans before returning to MIT.

Bridging the Divide Between Tech and Magic

Ironheart’s narrative picks up shortly after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. According to the official summary, “Set after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ironheart pits technology against magic when Riri—determined to make her mark on the world—returns to her hometown of Chicago. Her unique take on building iron suits is brilliant, but in pursuit of her ambitions, she finds herself wrapped up with the mysterious yet charming Parker Robbins, aka ‘The Hood’ (Anthony Ramos).”

The series is set to have a large, diverse cast. Lyric Ross will play Riri’s best friend, Natalie Washington; Alden Ehrenreich will play Joe McGillicuddy; Manny Montana will play Cousin John; Matthew Elam will play Xavier Washington; and Anji White will play Riri’s mother, Ronnie. Shea Coulée is also on the cast list as Slug. Jim Rash will also return to the MCU in the role of the dean of MIT, reprising a part he first played in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. Sacha Baron Cohen is also confirmed for a role in the series, but no more details have been released as to what part he will play.

The newest trailer immediately jumps into the action. Opening on Riri entering a now-defunct pizza shop, she is soon caught in an elevator containing gas pellets and only two minutes of air to breathe. It soon becomes clear this was set up by The Hood as a kind of test, or “interview” as he refers to it. Through the intercom, he tells her that she will die in two minutes unless she uses a floor-mounted box containing a gas mask. Riri, however, has other plans and instead engineers her way out of the box.

Impressed, The Hood soon offers Riri a place by his side in whatever it is he is planning to do, even if it is not completely legal. Eager to show her skills and create something truly “iconic,” Riri is about to accept until her friends, and especially Natalie, express their concerns with The Hood’s potentially shady dealings. This warning may be justified, as the Hood continues to warn Riri, “Anyone who has ever accomplished anything iconic in life has had to do some questionable things to get it done.”

It is a foregone conclusion that Riri will make some kind of moral compromise in the name of her abilities and in-film goals, and the series looks like it will focus on exactly how far Riri Williams will be willing to go to get what she wants.

Marvel has already set the premiere dates for the first three Ironheart episodes on Disney+ for June 24, 2025. The remaining episodes will drop every week from that point forward. Season two has not yet been announced, but that has not stopped many fans from speculating about how one could look, should the series perform well enough. In the meantime, there is the new teaser trailer and a brand new behind-the-scenes featurette for those who want to get an early look at the action, suspense, and character drama.
