Pop Culture Powerhouse: Comic-Con Kicks Off with Major Surprises

Comic-Con opened its doors today in San Diego, welcoming tens of thousands of fans from across the world—and this year, one of San Diego Comic-Con’s most historic attendees is in attendance, having longtime attendees geeking out.

George Lucas is officially attending Comic-Con for the very first time. While Comic-Con has deep roots with some of his most well-known projects, including Star Wars and Indiana Jones, the creator has previously never been able to make it to the world’s largest celebration of storytelling, cinema, and fandom.

“This year’s event will bring another milestone for us, as George Lucas will make his first Comic-Con appearance,” David Glanzer, Chief Communications and Strategy Officer, wrote in a statement. “Nearly 50 years ago, Star Wars made one of its first public appearances at our convention, while also having a booth featuring [comic book artist] Howard Chaykin’s now legendary Star Wars poster as a promotional giveaway. This year, we’ll welcome Lucas for a true full-circle moment, a milestone in our shared history, as he continues to be a guiding light of influence in world-building and visual storytelling.”

Lucas will take part in a Sunday panel that will be moderated by Queen Latifah. The panel will be about the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, which will open in Los Angeles next year, and where Lucas will be joined by Mexican director Guillermo del Toro and Oscar-winning artist Doug Chiang, who has conceptualized designs for the Star Wars franchise for decades. The trio will discuss the museum, which will celebrate “illustrated narratives and the power of storytelling in all its forms, with a particular emphasis on film, comics and concept art,” as well as a collection of Lucas’s archive.

The Evolution of Comic-Con in 50 Years

Comic-Con has gone from a small comic book convention to the unofficial Mecca of pop culture, having grown substantially in both size and reach since its start in 1970. Today, the event hosts approximately 130,000 attendees. Visitors come to the annual convention not only to dress up in cosplay and buy collectibles but also to get a rare glimpse at sneak peeks, panels, and world premieres of Hollywood’s most anticipated projects.

Alien and Predator Make Waves

A major debut that Comic-Con attendees are most excited about is Alien: Earth, a series based on the original film of the same name. Alien, which was directed by Ridley Scott in 1979, reimagined the sci-fi and horror genre by infusing elements of suspense, thrill, and action. And the series, directed by Noah Hawley, is a prequel set a few years before the events of the original film. It will premiere tomorrow in Hall H, the convention’s most prized venue, and streaming services will start to stream the series in August.

Another buzzworthy project is the new Predator film, Predator: Badlands, a reimagined take on the sci-fi horror franchise. Fans of the series will be thrilled to know that the films will not only have the iconic Predators, but now it will be a hunt for the hunter. In the film, for the first time in the franchise’s history, the Predator becomes the prey. The panel will feature the film’s director, Dan Trachtenberg, and actors Elle Fanning and Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi, who is playing the role of Dek, the alien race in the film. Trachtenberg’s 2022 hit Prey has reenergized the franchise, and fans are looking forward to where the director will take this new iteration of the Predator universe.

Marvel Pulls Back, Sci-Fi Takes Stage

Marvel Studios has decided to pull back on some of its Comic-Con appearances this year. The studio is no longer having its typical Hall H debut and is skipping this year’s Comic-Con because the upcoming Avengers installment was affected by changes to the film in recent months. The studio has taken on a less aggressive stance in the convention, Variety reported. Changes to the production that affected filming, which was still taking place in the UK, made it challenging for Marvel to present a clear vision at Comic-Con.

Still, Comic-Con is in for some big surprises and projects without Marvel to worry about. The sci-fi favorites have been amping up the Comic-Con announcement programming in Hall H to create buzz and get attendees excited for the weekend.

Ryan Gosling and Peacemaker, and More Must-See Panels

Comic-Con attendees will be able to check out Project Hail Mary, an upcoming film that will be based on the Andy Weir novel of the same name, the writer of the similarly successful The Martian. The film will hit theaters next year and stars Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace, a former schoolteacher who wakes up on a spaceship all by himself and has to figure out what is going on. Gosling will attend the film’s panel alongside directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the brains behind the Spider-Verse trilogy.

DC fans can also look forward to season 2 of Peacemaker. The DC universe creator, James Gunn, who will also helm DC’s cinematic reboot with Superman, will be at the panel alongside the cast to offer footage and previews from the second season.
