Strange New Worlds Season 3 Premieres July 17 on Paramount+
Paramount+ has finally released the official trailer for the upcoming Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The trailer was revealed today for the first season of the series that will premiere on Paramount+ on July 17, 2025. The upcoming third season only had an official teaser trailer earlier this past April.
Season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be picked up in the new trailer for Season 3, with the U.S.S. Enterprise stranded and in the middle of a surprise attack by the Gorn. As the Federation colony world they have arrived at is invaded, several crew members and other hostages are taken. The end of the previous season’s finale set up Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) to make a decision – to follow Starfleet’s order to retreat or to go against their orders to try and rescue the hostages. Of course, Pike, being Pike, made the choice he made to attempt to rescue the hostages at the cost of great risk.
At New York City Comic-Con last October, Paramount+ revealed a clip from the upcoming Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The trailer then was a continuation of the Season 2 finale and opens with an intense space battle. Not new to the series, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds frequently involves its crew in combat situations, with their most consistent aggressors being the Gorn. Continuing this trend, the trailer has another battle with the Gorn as the Enterprise crew is forced to engage in a high-stakes fight. However, it seems like the conflict with the Gorn will finally come to a close, and that the new trailer will set up new and strange new worlds for the Enterprise crew to travel to.
In the trailer for Season 3, the Enterprise is still under the command of Pike. The trailer promises that while they have some loose ends to tie up with the Gorn, the crew will encounter a new villain, who will push the Enterprise and its crew to their limits and put to test their loyalty, courage, and more. The trailers and official descriptions of Season 3 also hint at different genres of storytelling, which will also be experimented with this season. While fans of Star Trek are used to the series’ more grandiose episodic storytelling or the serialized character-driven storytelling of the franchise’s series, Strange New Worlds will also have some episodes that are of the faith, duty, romance, comedy, and even the whodunnit genre. According to Paramount+, there will also be episodes that will be interesting genre shifts, the likes of which haven’t been featured in the Star Trek series in the past.
As with Season 2, the main and recurring cast members of Strange New Worlds will all be returning for the third season as well. In a similar manner to previous announcements, the cast list for the third season also has the most notable addition for the series. The latest addition to the cast is Cillian O’Sullivan, who will be playing the role of Dr. Roger Korby. Korby is a legacy character from the original Star Trek series, originally played by Michael Strong. However, in the Strange New Worlds timeline, Korby is an archaeologist known for his work in medical archaeology and also the long-lost fiancé of Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush). The trailer seems to set up Chapel’s reunion with Korby as a source of tension – especially with how Chapel has moved on since Korby’s disappearance and is now romantically involved with Spock (Ethan Peck).
Two other names joining the cast of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 as guest stars have also been revealed. The two new guest stars are Rhys Darby and Patton Oswalt. From Oswalt’s addition and the April teaser trailer, the promise of genre experimentation this season is also continued, with episodes that will not just be starship battles or ‘will they, won’t they’ sideplots but also action-adventure epics, stand-alone stories, and even space hijinks. The new trailer also seems to hint at this variance in tone and content of the episodes for the upcoming season. In the trailer, crewmembers are bonding, a subplot involving a potential romantic pairing of characters gets handwaved by Pike, and even an entire section where an accidental Vulcan science experiment goes awry and then needs to be cleaned up.
One point of particular interest, especially for fans of the original series, is in the trailer when James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) is asked to take command of the Enterprise – albeit for a short period. While his role in the season’s events is unclear, one thing is known for certain: he is still in his formative years. Pike’s lesson to Kirk in that scene in particular is a note to all Starfleet officers – “The choices you make in that chair, they are yours to make and yours to live with.”
