Matt Light Evaluates the Patriots’ Offensive Line
The New England Patriots’ offensive line has been a topic of discussion throughout the start of the 2026 NFL season. Former Patriots offensive lineman Matt Light offered his perspective on the group’s performance and ongoing challenges during a recent episode of the “The Gronk and Jules Show.”
Increased Scrutiny Amid Injuries and Past Performance
Light acknowledged that both quarterback Drake Maye and his offensive line have faced scrutiny dating back to last season and continuing into the current campaign. “The way the season ended last year, the way it started out early, there are going to be a lot of people who continue to have question marks because the injuries continue to happen,” Light said. He emphasized that the spotlight on the unit is justified, considering the ongoing injuries and earlier results.
Pass Protection: Improvement Reflected in Time to Throw
Despite criticism, the Patriots’ offensive line has demonstrated that it is capable of giving Maye time to execute plays. According to Next Gen Stats, Maye has averaged 3.06 seconds to throw per drop back this season, ranking fifth in the league. Only Caleb Williams, Sam Darnold, Malik Willis, and Lamar Jackson have had more time, suggesting notable improvement in pass protection.
Key Injuries Affecting Unit Stability
Injuries remain a concern along the offensive front. Left tackle Will Campbell exited last Sunday’s win against the Raiders with a knee injury and is considered week to week. Rookie Caleb Lomu stepped in to fill his spot. Meanwhile, right guard Mike Onwenu has been sidelined since suffering an ankle injury in Week 2 against the Steelers. These absences have affected the group’s continuity and effectiveness.
Run Blocking and Rushing Statistics
While pass protection has improved, run blocking is still an area of concern. The Patriots are averaging 4.2 yards per carry, placing them 15th in the NFL, with rookie quarterback Maye’s 5.4 yards per carry boosting that statistic. However, the team ranks 22nd in rushing yards per game at 127.2, suggesting room for growth.
Josh McDaniels’ Offensive Scheme and Adjustments
Despite personnel challenges, the Patriots’ offense has shown signs of hitting its stride, recording a season-high 45 points in their latest victory over Las Vegas. Light credited offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels for his adaptability, saying, “He’s going to take those things into consideration and he has enough uniqueness to him that he can cater a game-plan that will be in their best interest.” Light noted that McDaniels’ experience will be vital as the team navigates ongoing injuries in the trenches.
Outlook for the Season
With improved pass protection and an offensive coordinator adept at making necessary adjustments, the Patriots’ offensive line remains an area of both promise and concern. According to Light, the unit’s ability to support Drake Maye and manage injuries will be crucial in determining whether they can contend for a playoff spot as the season progresses.
