Significant Donation to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital
Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, located on Belmont Avenue, has announced a major financial contribution from local businessman Willy Buhlmann. The $4 million donation comes as the hospital works to recover from an ongoing multimillion-dollar hospital budget deficit.
Willy Buhlmann: From Immigrant Business Owner to Philanthropist
Buhlmann, who emigrated from Switzerland in 1970, founded the Swiss Precision Turning machine shop in Brattleboro in 1990. After selling the business to New Hampshire-based Geokon in 2023, Buhlmann chose to make a significant impact on his community with this donation. "I'm glad I made Brattleboro my home, and I wanted to give something back," Buhlmann said. He emphasized the importance of the hospital to the community and his desire to ensure continued access to care for local residents.
Hospital Faces Ongoing Financial Challenges
The vermont healthcare facility manages a $130 million annual budget and is forecasting a $7.1 million budget shortfall for the 2027 fiscal year, which began on October 1. Previous years have also shown significant hospital operating losses: from fiscal years 2017 through 2025, the hospital reported a combined operating loss of $33.6 million. For the 2026 fiscal year, which ended September 30, an estimated $9.5 million shortfall was recorded.
According to a state filing, the hospital attributes these deficits to administrative and accounting errors in past years. Efforts to cover losses have depleted cash reserves, investments, and unrestricted assets, which dropped from $53.3 million in 2021 to a projected $19.7 million by 2027.
Community and Regulatory Response
Interim CEO David Sanville, previously the chief financial officer at Windsor's Mt. Ascutney Hospital and Health Center, called Buhlmann’s gift an “extraordinary investment in Brattleboro Memorial Hospital and in the future of health care in our region.” Fundraising head Gina Pattison joined Sanville and Buhlmann in marking the occasion at the hospital.
Last month, the Green Mountain Care Board—the state’s healthcare regulatory authority—reviewed spending plans for Vermont’s 14 general acute-care hospitals. While most received approval, Brattleboro Memorial Hospital was level-funded, pending further financial clarifications as the facility addresses its ongoing challenges.
Philanthropy and the Hospital’s Future
This act of local businessman donation to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital is notable, coming twelve years after Ronald Read, a former gas station attendant and janitor, left $4.8 million to the hospital upon his death in 2014. Buhlmann stated, “I wanted to make this donation while I’m still alive and can see its impact.”
Buhlmann’s gift provides crucial support to the hospital’s depleted investment account and highlights community commitment to sustaining vermont healthcare services during difficult times. The donation also underscores the importance of hospital fundraising and private healthcare investment while the facility faces close scrutiny from state regulators and works to stabilize its financial situation.
